The white, milky flow on the right side is typical of glacial meltwater, which is loaded with fine silt or "glacial flour" that gives it a cloudy appearance. This silt is created as the glacier grinds against bedrock, breaking it down into tiny particles. As this glacial meltwater flows into a river or lake, it often meets with clearer, bluer fresh water, as seen on the left side of the image. The contrasting colors and textures highlight the dynamic interaction between these two types of water. Over time, the glacial water may mix with the fresh water, but the initial meeting point often creates a striking visual boundary, which is beautifully captured in this image. This process is essential for distributing minerals and nutrients downstream, contributing to the health of Iceland's aquatic ecosystems.
